Blue Plaque Stories No. 1 – Sir Allen Lane, Exeter St David's Station

As you'll know, we love anything train related, and a we love blue plaques – so of course, we love capturing blue (and other colour) plaques at train stations!

We love this orange plaque at Exeter St David's, in honour of Sir Allen Lane. Exeter St David's is local to us, it's probably our favourite station and has been at the start or many of our train journeys.

Sir Allen was a British publisher who together with his brothers Richard and John Lane founded Penguin Books in 1935, bringing high-quality paperback fiction and non-fiction to the mass market.

The orange plaque, commissioned by Sir Allen Lane’s daughter Clare Morpurgo and designed by Penguin Random House, recognises Sir Allen’s contribution to British publishing and commemorates the location where he conceived the iconic sixpenny paperback. For the first time, the sixpenny paperback made quality literature accessible to a wide audience, sparking the paperback revolution and the beginning of Penguin Books.
